Artistic Journey

Carolee Hagey, originally from San Diego, California, was drawn to the art world after living in New York City. She returned to California to pursue her artistic path, completing a BA in Studio Art at UC Santa Cruz in 2024, with a focus on painting and sculpture. A relative newcomer to the art scene, Carolee’s work explores materiality, form, and personal narrative. Her pieces have been exhibited at the Senson Gallery and the Norris Center, and she is a 2024 recipient of the Irwin Grant for emerging artists.

Carolee’s work explores complex emotions, often grappling with the tension between internal feelings and external perceptions. Using bright colors to contrast darker themes, her paintings serve as emotional mappings, reflecting her personal struggles. Recently, she’s expanded into sculpture, enjoying the interactive nature of the medium and creating works that offer varied perspectives depending on the viewer’s position. As she develops her sculptural practice, Carolee plans to explore themes of social relationships and human interaction.

In contrast to her emotionally driven work, photography offers Carolee a way to engage with the world outside of herself. Her interest lies in capturing the patterns of biology and the beauty of architecture, which provide a grounding balance to her more introspective art. Moving forward, Carolee aims to blend emotional honesty with formal experimentation across mediums to create work that invites reflection and connection.
